Digital Marketing Platform Updates: 14 September 2026
This week's big theme: the platforms are pushing hard on AI-powered automation, and some of it is happening whether you opted in or not. Here is what changed, why it matters, and what to do about it.
Google Ads
AI Max Migration Is Rolling Through Your Account Right Now
Google started automatically upgrading eligible Search campaigns to AI Max on 1 September, and the rollout continues through the end of the month. If your campaigns used campaign-level Broad Match or legacy Automatically Created Assets (ACA), they are being migrated in waves. Your campaign might have already switched, or it could flip any day between now and 30 September.
Why it matters: AI Max replaces your legacy settings with AI-powered broad matching, text customisation, and final URL expansion. Your existing negatives carry over, but the way Google matches your ads to searches fundamentally changes. Some advertisers will see performance improve. Others will see spend shift toward queries they were not targeting before. What to do: Check your Search campaigns this week. Look for the "AI Max" label in your campaign settings. If your campaigns have been migrated, monitor your search terms report closely for the next two to three weeks. Add negatives promptly for any irrelevant queries. If you are running Dynamic Search Ads, you have more time: Google pushed that migration to February 2027.AI Dashboards Are Appearing in Accounts
Search Engine Land reported on 8 September that Google's new AI Dashboards have started showing up in advertiser accounts. Built on Gemini, these let you type a plain-English prompt (like "show me my top converting campaigns this month") and get a visual report with an AI-generated summary explaining the trends. Why it matters: For business owners who find Google Ads reporting overwhelming, this is genuinely useful. Instead of clicking through menus and building custom reports, you describe what you want to see. What to do: Look for the new Dashboards option in your Google Ads account. If it is there, experiment with it, but treat the AI summaries as a starting point rather than gospel. The data is real; the interpretation is AI-generated and may miss context that matters for your specific business.Display Ads Moving Into Demand Gen
Google is continuing its phased retirement of standalone Display campaigns, folding the Google Display Network into Demand Gen campaigns. The migration tool launched in June and the full transition runs through late 2026 into 2027.
Why it matters: If you are running Display campaigns, they will eventually need to move. Demand Gen uses the same visual ad formats (images, video, carousels) but runs them across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and the Display Network with AI-driven targeting instead of manual placements. What to do: No urgent action needed yet, but start familiarising yourself with Demand Gen campaign setup. If you are planning new Display campaigns, consider building them in Demand Gen from the start.Google Search
August Core Update Still Rolling Out
Google's August 2026 core update started on 26 August and is not expected to finish until around 21 September. That means rankings are still shifting right now.
Why it matters: Early data shows sites with strong Core Web Vitals performance are seeing meaningful traffic gains, while sites relying on scaled AI-generated content or expired-domain redirects are losing visibility. Google is doubling down on rewarding genuine expertise and firsthand experience. If your website has original, helpful content, this update is likely working in your favour. What to do: Check your Google Search Console performance over the last three weeks. If you are seeing ranking drops, do not panic or make sweeping changes while the update is still rolling. Once it finishes (expected around 21 September), compare your before-and-after metrics. Focus on content quality, page speed, and demonstrating real expertise in your field.Meta Ads
Advantage+ Leads Campaigns Go Global With Verification Tools
Meta's Advantage+ Leads Campaigns are now available globally, and they have added lead verification tools that are genuinely useful for Australian SMEs tired of junk leads.
You can now require SMS verification (the lead gets a code to their phone) or work email verification (only corporate email addresses accepted) before a lead form submits. Meta is also testing address verification as a third option.
Why it matters: Lead quality has always been the Achilles' heel of Facebook lead ads. These verification steps add friction, which will reduce your total lead volume, but the leads that do come through are far more likely to be real. Meta's own data shows a 14% lower cost per lead and 10% lower cost per qualified lead for advertisers using Advantage+ Leads. What to do: If you are running lead generation campaigns on Facebook or Instagram, test Advantage+ Leads with SMS verification enabled. Start with a small budget alongside your existing campaigns and compare lead quality over two weeks. For B2B advertisers, work email verification is worth testing as well, though it may be too restrictive for most Australian SMEs selling to consumers.Advantage+ Becoming the Default
Meta has updated Ads Manager so that Advantage+ automation tools are now the default option when creating new campaigns. You can still switch to manual settings, but the platform is clearly steering everyone toward its AI-powered campaign types.
What to do: When creating new campaigns, pay attention to the default settings before launching. Make sure you understand what Advantage+ is doing with your targeting and creative before letting it run. Also Worth Knowing
Microsoft Ads has made its own version of AI Max generally available and turned it on by default for all new Search campaigns. If you are importing campaigns from Google Ads, your AI Max settings now carry across automatically. This mostly matters if you are running Microsoft/Bing campaigns alongside Google, but it is another signal that AI-powered search matching is becoming the industry standard. The Takeaway
The single most important thing this week: check whether your Google Ads Search campaigns have been migrated to AI Max. It is happening right now, it changes how your ads match to searches, and it is not reversible once it is done. Monitor your search terms closely for the next few weeks and be ready to add negatives.
