Digital Marketing Platform Updates: 12 October 2026

Google Ads is making moves this week. One change takes effect today and needs your attention immediately. Meanwhile, PMax finally gets proper A/B testing, a quiet change to how Display conversions are counted could inflate your numbers, and Meta laid the groundwork for AI agents that shop on behalf of your customers.

Google Ads

Your website coupons may now appear in your ads (starting today)

From today, 12 October, Google Ads will automatically scan your website for promotions, coupons, and deals, then attach them to your Search and Performance Max campaigns as promotion assets. No manual setup required. No approval step either.

Why it matters: If you have a coupon code on your website, a seasonal sale banner, or a "10% off first order" popup, Google may now pull that into your ad copy automatically. This applies to campaigns with linked location assets that don't already have manually created promotion assets attached. The intent is to improve click-through rates by showing offers directly in ads. The risk is that Google surfaces a promotion you didn't intend to advertise broadly, or one that's expired but still technically on your site. What to do: Check your account today. Go to Tools and Settings, then Account Settings, then Automatic Assets. Find Automated Promotions and switch it off if you want to keep control of which offers appear in your ads. If your campaigns already have manually created promotion assets, you're not affected. If you're comfortable with Google pulling offers from your site, leave it on but monitor what's being shown over the next couple of weeks.

Performance Max A/B testing is now available to everyone

Google rolled out asset experiments for Performance Max campaigns to all advertisers on 2 October. You can now run a proper controlled test between your existing creative assets and a modified set, with statistical confidence reporting.

Why it matters: This is a genuine milestone for PMax. Until now, testing creative in Performance Max was essentially guesswork. You'd swap assets and hope to spot a difference in performance, with no way to isolate whether changes in results came from the creative or from a dozen other variables. Now you can set up a control arm with your current assets and a treatment arm with new images, videos, headlines, or descriptions, and get a statistically valid read on which performs better. What to do: If you're running PMax campaigns, start planning a test. The most impactful first experiment for most SMEs is testing your hero images or your headline set. Keep it simple: change one thing at a time so you know what drove the difference. Google also supports adding Gemini-generated video assets to the treatment arm through Asset Studio, which makes video testing accessible even if you don't have production capability.

View-through conversion counting just got looser for Display

Google changed the view-through conversion definition for Display ads within Demand Gen campaigns. Previously, a "view" required Active View verification: the ad needed to be 50% visible on screen for at least one second. Now, a "view" counts if just one pixel of the ad renders on screen, for any duration.

Why it matters: Your view-through conversion numbers for Demand Gen Display campaigns will likely go up, and it won't be because your campaigns are performing better. It's because more impressions now qualify as "views" under the new, much lower bar. If you're using view-through conversions in your reporting or bidding, this change could quietly skew your data. What to do: If you run Demand Gen campaigns with Display placements, flag this change now. When comparing VTC numbers from before and after this rollout, account for the methodology shift. If your VTCs suddenly jump 20 to 40 percent in October, it's probably the measurement change rather than a real performance improvement. Consider whether view-through conversions should remain in your primary reporting at all, or whether click-through conversions give you a cleaner picture.

Google Search

September spam update finally finished

Google's September 2026 spam update completed on 8 October after nearly 14 days of rolling out, making it the longest spam update this year by a wide margin. Previous spam updates in 2026 (March, June, August) each wrapped up within two days. This one hit in three distinct waves: 25 to 27 September, around 30 September, and 4 to 6 October.

Why it matters: Industry tracking tools reported this update had an impact closer to a core update than a typical spam update. The median share of organic Google traffic across 32,000 tracked sites dropped from 34% to 31% during the first wave. If your rankings shifted any time in the last three weeks, the spam update is the most likely cause. Google's fourth spam update in 2026 makes this the most active year for spam enforcement since 2021. What to do: Open Google Search Console and compare performance for the last 28 days against the previous period. Look for sudden drops in impressions or clicks, particularly around the three wave dates. If you've been hit, audit your content for pages that look like they exist to rank rather than to genuinely help visitors. This applies equally to AI-generated content and human-written thin content. With a potential core update expected before the end-of-year holiday season, now is the time to clean house.

Meta Ads

Meta and Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol

On 6 October, Meta and Sierra announced an open standard called the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP) that defines how AI agents authenticate with businesses and act on behalf of consumers. Founding partners include Shopify, Stripe, and Walmart.

Why it matters: This is not something you need to act on today, but it signals where commerce is heading. The idea is that a customer's personal AI agent (like Meta's Muse) could visit your website, log in on the customer's behalf, browse products, and eventually complete a purchase. The v0.1 specification is expected later this month. This has serious implications for how businesses will need to structure their websites and checkout processes in the future, especially the idea that your next "customer" might not be a human browsing your site but an AI agent navigating your product catalogue. What to do: Nothing immediately. But file this one away. If you sell products online, the businesses that benefit from agentic commerce will be the ones with clean product data, structured catalogues, and clear pricing. The same foundations that help Google Shopping and SEO will help AI agents find and recommend your products. This is a longer-term trend worth watching.

WhatsApp billing change now live

From 1 October, WhatsApp Business API service messages beyond the first 1,000 per phone number per month are now billable. Reactions remain free.

Why it matters: If you use WhatsApp Business for customer service or order notifications at scale, costs just went up. For most Australian SMEs using WhatsApp casually, this won't have an impact. But if you've built automated notification flows through the WhatsApp API, check your volume.

TikTok

Major advertising announcements at Advertising Week

TikTok unveiled several AI-powered features at Advertising Week New York on 5 October: Buy Direct (one-click in-app checkout), an AI-powered Shopping Assistant, Agentic Leads for automated lead generation, and the TikTok Ad Network expanding to US advertisers across nearly 400,000 third-party apps.

Why it matters: TikTok is pushing hard into commerce and lead generation with AI at the centre. The Shopping Assistant lets users pose conversational queries to find products without leaving the app. The Ad Network expansion lets advertisers extend campaigns beyond TikTok into third-party apps. Integration partners include Shopify, Salesforce, and Stripe. Most of these features are US-first, but they signal TikTok's strategic direction and will likely reach Australian advertisers in the coming months. What to do: If you advertise on TikTok, keep an eye on the AU rollout timeline. The Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct features could meaningfully change how product-based businesses use the platform, but they're not actionable for Australian advertisers yet.

The Takeaway

Check your Google Ads account today. The automated promotions feature goes live on 12 October and will pull coupons and deals from your website into your ads without asking. If you want to control which offers appear in your campaigns, opt out now before Google starts making that decision for you.
